Althingi has passed a legislative amendment which raises the maximum criteria for the income and assets for public housing. The change came into effect on January 1st, 2020.

The maximum criteria for income and property:

  • For a single tenant: Max 6.420.000 ISK per year before tax (or 535.000 ISK per month).
  • For couples: Max 8.988.000 ISK per year before tax (or 749.000 ISK per month).
  • For every child in the family, 19 or younger the income can be higher by 1.605.000 ISK per year before tax (or 133.750 ISK per month).
  • The total assets of the tenants shall not be higher than 6.930.000 ISK.

Bjarg íbúðafélag welcomes these changes which give more individuals and families the opportunity for affordable and secure rental housing.

Active applicants who had previously been rejected on the ground of too high income or assets, but are now subject to new criteria, will be offered an apartment as they become available.

In the coming days and weeks, Bjarg will open for applications at four new locations, in Hraunbaer, in Hallgerðargata by Kirkjusandur, Gudmannshaga (Akureyri) and in Silfratjörn in Úlfarsárdalur. Applications for rental apartments in Þorlákshöfn are already open.

Further information on new apartments and conditions for allocation can be found on the Bjargs website.
